Wear a little purple this Thursday: it's Spirit Day

Purple text on a yellow and lilac grid: "Wear a little purple this Thursday: it's Spirit Day"

Got anything purple? Keep it close. This Thursday, 15 October, is Spirit Day.

On Spirit Day, people wear purple to show support for LGBTQ+ young people and to take a stand against bullying. That's it. A colour, worn on purpose, so that someone who's having a hard time can look around and see they're not alone.

Where it started

Spirit Day began in 2010, started by a teenager called Brittany McMillan. GLAAD has promoted it ever since, and it now happens every year on the third Thursday of October. Schools, workplaces, friends, families: lots of people go purple for one day.

We love that it started with one young person and one simple idea. Proof that small things travel.

Why it matters to us

Isar Things Shop is built on one promise: everyone is welcome here, whoever they are. No "his" and "hers", no labels, nobody who has to explain themselves. A happy place made of colours.

So a day where the whole point is a colour that says "you belong"? We're in. ๐Ÿ’œ

Go purple, your way

There's no dress code. No rules. Just a few ideas:

  • A full purple look. Go loud, go head to toe, go for it.
  • A tiny touch. Socks, a pin, a hair clip, nail polish. It counts just the same.
  • Mix it in. Purple with red, with pink, with orange. Clashing is allowed. Encouraged, even.
  • Share it. A photo, a story, a word to a friend. Seeing other people join in matters, especially for young people.
  • Be the safe person. If you see someone being picked on, stand next to them. That's the real outfit.

Our purple-ish pick this week is not even something you wear: our little lilac jewellery tray with red flowers is where your pins and rings can live the other 364 days of the year. A small, happy reminder on your shelf.

You're welcome here

If you're a young person reading this and things are tough right now: you deserve to feel safe exactly as you are. Talk to someone you trust, a friend, a teacher, a family member, or a local support service near you.

And to everyone else: see you on Thursday, in purple. ๐Ÿ’œ
