"No costume rules: Halloween from your own wardrobe"

halloweenstylingcostumes

Halloween is tomorrow, Saturday 31 October, and you don't need a costume aisle to join in.

Here's our rule for tonight: no "for him", no "for her". A costume is whoever you want to be for one evening. A cat, a sailor, a ghost, a tomato. Your call.

Start with what you already own

Most good costumes are 90% regular clothes and one funny detail. Open your wardrobe and look for:

  • Stripes. Striped tops are secretly a hundred costumes: sailor, pirate, mime, painter.
  • One bold colour. Head to toe in a single shade is instant character.
  • Things with ears, hearts or faces. The silly details do the work for you.
  • Whatever you'd wear anyway. A costume you feel comfortable in is a costume you'll enjoy.

Wine red long-sleeve boxy top with thin cream stripes on a hanger

This wine red top with thin cream stripes is a Breton-style classic. Add a bandana and you're a pirate. Add a beret and you're in Paris. Wear it with jeans and you're ready for brunch the next day. Boxy, soft, and good on any body.

Add one silly detail

The detail is the joke. A tiny thing that tells everyone who you are tonight.

Bag charm with an orange cat 'Hello' pendant, pastel chain links and a pink cord with rainbow beads, clipped to a cream bag

This little orange cat "Hello" charm with a rainbow beaded cord is a good start for a very friendly cat costume. Clip it on your bag, your belt loop or your jacket.

No pressure

Dress up all the way, add one tiny detail, or stay in your cosiest knit with a smile. All three count. Have the best evening. ๐ŸŽƒ
